Chapter 19

EMMA BUCKMAN ARRIVED home late in the evening. She pulled into the parking lot outside her condo and I sat in the Jeep watching her. I was hesitant to approach too fast. After all, it was dark. And I didn’t need to startle her.

You never know.

She stepped from her car and looked around when I called her name. First thing she did was reach into her purse. She pulled out a small spray bottle and held it up in front of her then turned in my direction, pointing it my way.

I was sure it was pepper spray and raised my hands. “Wait! Don’t! It’s me. Henry Walsh. Please don’t spray that.”

She kept the bottle up toward me, her eyes squinted. “Oh, you mean the stalker. If anyone should get this in the face, it’s you.”

I took a small step closer. “Can we talk?”

After she paused for a couple of moments, she put the spray back in her purse. I moved closer but she didn’t take her eyes off of me.

“Are you alone?” I said.

She hadn’t yet pulled her hand from inside her purse. “That’s kind of a creepy question to ask a woman in a dark parking lot.”

I looked up toward the lights overhead. “They really should make them a little brighter.” I eased my hands down by my side. “I’m just here to talk.”

She pointed her remote toward her car. The look on her face eased and the trunk lid popped open. She stepped to the back of her car and reached inside, pulled out a duffle bag and hung it over her shoulder.

“Can I help you with that?” I said.

She gave me somewhat of a crooked smile. “Are you looking for an excuse to come into my home?”

I shook my head. “I’m just offering to carry your bag.”

“I don’t know what else you need to know. I think you already know more about me than I’d like you to.”

“I’m not here to get involved in your love triangle. I’m here because my partner was shot. She’s lucky to be alive.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Emma turned and started toward the entrance to her building. “But what does that have to do with me?”

I didn’t answer, because I wasn’t sure. “Your friend Bruce Rose showed up at my boat in the middle of the night. And it wasn’t to see if I’d take him out on the river.”

“Is that what happened to your face?”

I touched one of the handful of bruises. “Are you going to tell me you know nothing about it?”

She pulled the door to her building open and turned, gave me a look over her shoulder and shook her head without giving me much of an answer.
